Vacation, days 8-9.......
Aug. 17th, 2003 11:10 pmSat. 8/16: It was a rough night. Maria didn't sleep much, and neither did Mommy, so I volunteered to get up in the morning and watch Maria. I also turned on the TV and watched Saturday morning cartoons on ABC. I like Recess and Fillmore (hey, Ookla did the theme music; what's not to like?), but didn't care for Teamo Supremo. And the few minutes I spent watching Lizzie McGuire made me realize that teenage girls haven't changed that much in the past 25 years. (However, I like how they cut to the animated Lizzie when they're showing her thoughts. Nice touch.)
Soon, Rebecca woke up, and we went to Panera Bread for lunch. Afterward, we went to Trader Joe's for some out-of-the-ordinary grocery shopping (I got my wasabi peas and rice crackers!), and Zany Brainy to see what educational toys and things they had for Maria. We came home with two Strega Nona books. I also stopped at the Saturn dealership to have a new emergency key made for the new car.
Later that afternoon, after we came home, I hung the new shelves behind the pantry door, giving us a little more shelf space. (Finally -- one of the tasks I was hoping to do got done!) I also washed, Rain-X'ed and Armor-All'ed the new car.
Dinner was take-out from the local Steak & Shake. Unfortunately, they were swamped, and didn't get my food for about 20 minutes. When I got home, I realized they mixed up the ingredients on my burger (single with cheese and everything except mayo) and my wife's burger (double with cheese, pickle, and mayo only). At least they got the shakes right -- two large chocolate malts. I was also hoping to go to the USS Bismarck meeting, but the delay at Steak & Shake put the kibosh on those plans -- by the time I'd get to the meeting site, the meeting would be over. So I stayed home and we watched our DVD of The Producers.
Sun. 8/17: Rebecca didn't sleep well, so Daddy got up and watched Maria. We also watched our DVD of Lilo & Stitch for the first time. Rebecca got up halfway through the movie and watched the second half with us. She also restarted the movie to watch it in its entirety. That's when I went outside to weed around the flowers in my front yard, and clean the lawn furniture on our patio. (Another task done! Yay!)
Today's lunch was at RJ's Metropolitan, a local breakfast-and-lunch-only place that occupies a building where a Perkins used to be until it closed a few years ago. I had the house quiche (which had spinach, mushrooms, and asiago cheese); Rebecca had the French Toast Royale. Then we went to Siebenthaler's Nursery to get an insect killer for our rose bush, since something's been eating at the leaves. Then we took a leisurely drive to Caesar's Creek Dam and Gorge, going through Bellbrook, Lytle, Waynesville, and Oregonia on the way there. We stayed for about an hour, and took another leisurely drive back, stopping for groceries along the way.
Dinner was at home today -- hot dogs for Rebecca, and shish kebabs with Italian sausage, peppers, and onions for me. Nothing beats the taste of fire-roasted green bell peppers. Yum! Dessert was mixed berries with Cool Whip. Then I took care of my usual Sunday night chores -- clean the cat boxes, take out the trash, and dump recyclables in the blue bin for collection by my trash hauler. I also watered the flowers, since it hadn't rained in several days. That's a far cry from early July, when it rained nearly every day for two weeks.
Tomorrow I'm going back to work. I really enjoyed my vacation at home. Part of me wishes I can stay home another week. Perhaps I should do this more often in the future. (I know that someday, when I retire, every day will be like Saturday.)
