Earlier this summer I talked about favorite ice cream places in my entry "I scream, you scream...". Well, what's a summertime food discussion without talking about other favorite summertime foods, like hamburgers, hot dogs, iced tea, lemonade, and loganberry drink?

Here are my favorite places to go for hot dogs.

Ted's Hot Dogs, various locations in the Buffalo NY area (and one in Tempe, AZ, which I've not been to). Founded by Greek immigrant Ted Liaros in 1927, Ted's is the place to go in Buffalo for charcoal-broiled hot dogs. I usually get mine loaded -- mustand, ketchup, dill pickle, onion, and their secret family recipe chili sauce. Unlike many hot dog stands that are open during the summer only, they're open year-round! Both the grilling and eating areas are inside. They use Sahlen's hot dogs, which have a natural casing and split quite nicely when they're cooked.

The Root Beer Stande, Dayton OH. This used to be part of the old A&W chain, until they split from the parent company and became independent. This is one of the few remaining drive-in restaurants in the Dayton area. Like the drive-in theatres, these are sadly becoming a thing of the past. Here's the drill: Pull up to a parking spot (covered or uncovered), a waitress walks up -- they don't skate up -- to your door, takes your order, brings your order several minutes later, and you enjoy your meal in the confines of your automobile. If you have a convertible, drop the top and see the stars at night -- and the fluorescent lights with the yellow bug-resistant tube covers.

Skyline Chili, various locations in the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus OH areas. While the chili-on-spaghetti is the main attraction, their second-best favorite is their Skyliner, also called the Cheese Coney. This has a steamed hot dog (I suspet they use Kahn's) covered with secret recipe Skyline Chili, mustard, and onions on a bun.

Missisippi Mudds, Tonawanda NY. A great summertime place, along the east fork of the Niagara River as it goes around Grand Island. Hot dogs, burgers, Perry's Ice Cream, soft-serve ice cream, and loganberry drink. They have it all! They have an upper deck above the restaurant on which patrons can view the scenery, including the boats on the river (and the infamous "submarine races" which have since fallen into urban legend).

Of course, hot dogs are available nearly everywhere at places like Dairy Queen, Tastee-Freez (remember the John Cougar Mellancamp song?), A&Ws (and combinations thereof), Sonic Restaurants, even the local Speedway carries them (cooked on hot metal rollers). But nothing beats the flavor, the ambience, or the charm of these summertime hangouts.

For hamburgers, the place I'd go isn't Mickey D's, BK's, or Wendy's, but Cold Beer & Cheeseburgers, Dayton OH. Just like their name, they serve cold beer (many different varieties, bottled and kept on ice behind the bar), and delicious cheeseburgers. I like mine with Pepper Jack cheese. I haven't been there in a while because it's also a bar, and where there's a bar, there's cigarette smoke.

Since I moved out to Dayton 14 years ago, I've developed a fondness for bratwurst (which we called "white-hots" in Buffalo). I have mine with mustard and sauerkraut. I've tried mettwurst once, but I didn't care for it. It's kind of like a spiced-up hot dog-sized version of kielbasa, or Polish sausage. The locals call them "metts", but when I hear the word "metts", I think of a major league baseball team that sucks. (I'd rather root for the Yankees.)

The folks in Cleveland have their hot dogs with Bertmann's Stadium Mustard. It's not as yellow as French's (which they used to make in Rochester), and not as spicy as Gulden's, but it's great on hot dogs or brats.

Oh yeah...what else does this expatriated Buffalonian miss? Weber's Horseradish Mustard, Aunt Rosie's Loganberry Drink (a loganberry is a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry), and Chiavetta's Barbecue Sauce (actually, it's a marinate). It's just not summer without them! (I don't miss Genesee Beer, though. Very heavy on the hops. And especially not Genesee Cream Ale, aka "Jenny Screamers"!)

What are your favorite summertime eateries? What do you like on your hot dog?
