What's on the telly?
Nov. 4th, 2003 12:00 amWhat's been on my television this past week:
Whole Lotta Yiffing Going On: Did anyone see last week's episode of CSI[:Vegas]? Most of the regular series had Halloween episodes last week, and CSI was no exception. The "A plot" was a murder at a furry con -- I think it was called PAFCON, for "Plushy and Furry Con" -- that took place in (where else?) Las Vegas. Now, I'm not into anthropomorphics, but I know a few folks that are. My concern was whether it was an accurate and not demeaning portrayal of the people who attend such conventions, as the media tends to do with established subcultures like SF fandom. They even included some of the lingo, like "skritching" (playful scratching) and "yiffing" (something between a pile-on and an orgy). If this series was on HBO, the music playing at the private yiffing party would have been "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails.
Name That Tune: I like to watch the Weather Channel in the morning. I'll turn it on, and leave it on for a few hours to have some background noise. I also get my "smooth jazz" fix from the music they play for the local forecasts. Last month, there was a really nice guitar piece they used. It sounded like Pat Metheny, but it wasn't anything I recognized. It was a fast 6/8 or 12/8, was mostly chords without a melody, and had a lot of added 9ths in the chords. The progression included chords like Bb sus2 (or Bb add9), Am7, Eb maj9, D, Em9. I want a copy! What's that tune? Aarrgghh! Thankfully, I found a page on the Weather Channel web site which lists the background music they use every month.
Tree House of Horror XIV: Sat down to watch the annual Simpsons Halloween special. In descending order of preference, I liked Reaper Madness (Homer as the Grim Reaper), Frinkenstein (The Mad Scientist who reanimated his dead father), and Stop The World I Want To Goof Off (the Stopwatch that Stopped Time).
Next: Scary Foods II: The Stuff That Just Looks, Smells, Or Tastes Nasty!
