I'm [still] running Windows 98 SE. And I think I have a memory leak someplace. After I boot up, I have about 50% available resources (according to the Resource Monitor program). After I run programs (e.g. Eudora 5.2.1), the available resources I have shrinks. And I can't get back up to around 50%. (The other 50% are things like Norton SystemWorks and Internet Security).

Does anyone know of a utility that shows the individual processes and the resources they're consuming? In other words, is there a utility comparable to Windows NT/2000/XP's Task Manager? All the cleanup programs address what's on the disk, not what's available in memory.

I know there were always two key points about memory management in W98. The first was that there's always some memory leakage when Alt-Tabbing between windows. I don't know how much or why, but I know that it was so (it was pointed out to me at one point, and from then on, I moused between windows if I could -- which of course caused resource losses in my wrist. :-\

The other was that I used MemTurbo to reclaim memory that had gotten tied up. It worked quite well, though I know there were other such software out there. I recommend looking into memory managers, though when/if you move to W2K or WinXP, they're far less necessary.

Back when I was still using Win98, I ended up having to stop using Eudora because it was eating so much of my resources. Which is a pity, because I still think Eudora was the best mail program I ever used. Thunderbird is a viable alternative, but I still miss the old program.

Install Thunderbird and configure it to leave your mail on the server. Try it for 3-4 days and see if it was Eudora which was eating all your memory.
