Weekends at the pools....
Jul. 4th, 2006 06:47 pmThe past two weekends have been spent at two of the local pools. On the two Saturdays, we went to the local rec center and swam in the kiddie pool there. The depth ranges from 0 (there's a ramp into the pool) to 3 1/2 feet. At the 2 1/2 feet depth there is a safety rope. On the two Sundays, we went to the Water Raves water park at the Kettering Recreation Center. The first Sunday, I got a nasty sunburn on my back. This past Sunday, I used sunscreen and wore a T-shirt.
This is more swimming than I've done in the past few years. And I'm enjoying it. So is the rest of my family.
I remember the local public pool where I grew up. It was the Brighton Pool in the town of Tonawanda, NY. Even though we had a pool in our backyard (until 1983), I still went because it had fun things like a slide, a diving board (both 1 m and 3 m), and lanes for lap swimming. I remember not going for a while because someone had an accident in the pool. (Think of the pool scene from "Caddyshack". The one with the candy bar.) And I vividly remember someone blowing apart a metal trash can with an M-80. It was so loud that a passing truck on the neighboring highway pulled over to check if they had a blown tire.
If I remember correctly, the pool no longer exists. It's been filled in with dirt and I can't remember what's on the site now. I think the only public pool in my home town is the one at their recreation center, which was built on the site of another public pool -- the old Delaware Pool on Sheridan Dr. It's a nice pool; don't get me wrong. But I kind of miss riding my bike to the Brighton Pool, checking in my towel with the man in the locker area, getting my safety pin with my locker number, and swimming in the afternoons in the summertime. The kids growing up won't have that experience, unless they ride their bikes to the recreation center.

Date: 2006-07-05 02:43 am (UTC)That pool is still there, but I never go; I no longer live nearby. There's a community pool in my neighborhood, but I'm much more likely to go to the beach these days.
