What to do, what to do....
Aug. 31st, 2006 08:54 pm.....while I wait the required 10-15 minutes for the lock on my email program to expire after I've been dropped while in the middle of downloading email to Eudora. Again.
In the meantime, I got questions. My LJ-friends have answers. I hope.
If I got DSL or cable-based broadband, would I still get these damn drop-carrier events?
What is the difference between a no-hitter and a perfect game?
Why is a bass clarinet not called a tenor clarinet? In other words, why does the clarinet family not follow the nomenclature of the saxophone family (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass)?
Has Kate Bush released any albums since "The Red Shoes"? (Oh yeah. "Aerial", which is still on my wish list.)
Does anyone still write code in Ada?
Why do I have such great ideas for songs, but only get to write one or two lines of them?
Who moved my cheese?

Date: 2006-09-01 02:03 am (UTC)Exceedingly unlikely. Moreover, Eudora wouldn't lock you out, because you'd have switched to Mozilla Thunderbird :-)
What is the difference between a no-hitter and a perfect game?
In a no-hitter, the pitcher may have issued walks or hit one or more batters. A perfect game consists of
12 strikes, scoring 300exactly 27 batters coming ot the plate, and none getting on base.Why do I have such great ideas for songs, but only get to write one or two lines of them?
When you find out, please let me know, so I can stop doing the same thing. Thanks.

Date: 2006-09-01 02:07 am (UTC)If your broadband connection actually works, you won't see such a thing (unless the problem is with your ISP). Broadband connections can sometimes be flaky, but if it is the provider should actually recognize it as a problem and get it fixed (and stop billing you until they do), unlike the phone company with dialup. Also, since any given transfer is much faster over a broadband connection, it's much less likely that the connection would fail in the middle of a transfer.
What is the difference between a no-hitter and a perfect game?
A no-hitter means no batter got credit for a hit, but can include walks or people getting on base (or even scoring) because of various kinds of screwups (fielding errors, hit by pitch, yada yada yada). It's called a perfect game if no runner ever reaches first base, which is harder. I've always thought that the phrase perfect game should be reserved for the theoretical perfection of throwing 81 consective strikes (striking out each batter with just three pitches). But though I'm no baseball buff, I know no one has ever come close to that; nobody's even come very close to 27 strikeouts in a 9-inning game. I wonder if the stats mavens could tell me how often, if ever, a pitcher has delivered a truly perfect inning (9 consecutive strikes).

Date: 2006-09-01 02:39 am (UTC)Why should outs be restricted to strikeouts? If you want to go that route, ask for the pitcher to deliver only 27 pitches, each resulting in an out.

Because people got scared of how big saxophones were getting and no one wanted the clarinets to end up that way.
Don't know.
Is that like Morse code? ;o)
You are too busy living life.

Date: 2006-09-02 02:13 am (UTC)We had baritone saxes at our high school. Those were pretty big. I tried to hold and play one and I just felt dwarfed by it back then. I haven't seen a bass sax in person, but I've seen pictures of one. They're huge! And then there's the Eb contrabass sax. Oy vey!
There are clarinets larger/longer than the bass clarinet. There's the Eb contrabass clarinet, the BBb contrabass clarinet, and even an octocontrabass clarinet that was made by LeBlanc.
There are big flutes out there too. You probably know about the bass flute --

Date: 2006-09-02 03:34 am (UTC)After noticing that most of my drops happen while I'm downloading email (via Eudora 5.2), I wonder if it's something in the program that's causing these drops. I can read LJ, web-surf, and download megabytes without a problem, but as soon as I bring up Eudora, I get dropped.

Date: 2006-09-02 04:19 am (UTC)I've always wanted an alto flute. Someday, when I'm rich and famous I'll get one.
I tried a bass flute once. BEAUTIFUL resonant tone but they require a very open throat and my gag reflex wasn't happy about that.

Date: 2006-09-04 06:21 am (UTC)Here is what they say about system requirements. Despite what they say, I don't see why processor speed would be crucial.
Operating Systems
* Windows 98
* Windows 98SE
* Windows ME
* Windows NT 4.0
* Windows 2000
* Windows XP (Recommended)
Minimum Hardware
* Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500MHz or greater)

* 52 MB hard drive space
Have you thought about upgrading to Eudora 7?

Date: 2006-09-05 04:08 am (UTC)As for Eudora 7, I've thought about upgrading, but haven't gone to the local Wi-Fi Cafe to download it yet. I really dislike being forced to "keep up with the Joneses" when it comes to software, even if it's free.
One thing that is missing in Eudora is an archival function. I have email dating back to 1997 in Eudora. It would have been nice to be able to save a whole year's worth of email and have it archived on CD-R.
