Leave it to the Center for Science in the Public Interest to take the fun out of eating. They just published another list of foods that may be popular but just plain bad for you.
Do they want all of us to be stick-figure thin?
My weaknesses: Cheese. Shrimp. Dairy products. Stuff that's high in cholesterol and/or fat (and taste). And of course, portion control. I know I tend to eat more than I need. But dammit, after one Healthy Choice entree, I'm still hungry!
Despite their nagging, I'm tring to eat sensibly. I try to avoid French fries. I'm amazed that Burger King would roll out something like their Quad Stacker sandwich. That's a heart attack waiting to happen. I like fish, and until the end of Lent, I can pretty much pick and choose where I get my fish sandwiches. (My current favorites are McDonald's Filet-O-Fish and Frisch's Big Boy's fish sandwich.)

Date: 2007-02-26 09:59 pm (UTC)Eating fast food in moderation--say, once a week or less--isn't gonna kill you. It's when you eat the stuff EVERY DAY that you're going to experience problems. (And unfortunately, lots of people *do* eat the stuff every day.)

Why do Americans regularly sit down and eat more calories and fat in a single meal than is recommended for an entire day? Is it any wonder that heart disease and diabetes is on the rise?

Date: 2007-02-27 04:41 pm (UTC)I'll grant you that CSPI isn't as bad or as obnoxious as some of the more extreme orgs out there -- PETA, Greenpeace, Operation Rescue.
Part of the problem is the powerful food lobby. They've worked to alter the USDA food pyramid, among other things.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see warning labels on pop cans in my lifetime.

And getting rid of High Fructose Corn Syrup.
