On Saturday, the NewOpenWorld Foundation announced the results of the voting for the New Seven Wonders of the World.

They are:
The Great Wall, China
Petra, Jordan
The Christ Redeemer statue, Brazil
Macchu Picchu, Peru
Chichén Itzá, Mexico
The Roman Coliseum, Italy
The Taj Mahal, India

I'm honestly surprised that Stonehenge, the Acropolis, and Easter Island were not selected to be in the top 7. The Acropolis is (I believe) the only surviving structure from the ancient Greek civilization. And it's still not known how the ancient druids were able to move and arrange those giant stones at Stonehenge. Ditto that for the statues on Easter Island.

But four of the ones I voted for -- the Coliseum, the Great Wall, Macchu Picchu, and Chichén Itzá (the Mayan Pyramid) -- made the list. Petra and the Taj Mahal were on my "maybe" list.

I've been to Chichen Itza. The Mayans (and Incans) have always fascinated me, the Aztecs not so much. Went there alone on Spring Break '91 as a "personal expedition" and ran around the Yucatan Peninsula on public transportation. It was a precursor to the solitary Europe backpacking trip of '92.
