Two weeks ago, I ordered a Creative Labs MuVo V100 MP3 player/voice recorder. Creative was running a sale on them; the 2 Gb model was around $30. I wanted the MuVo because it was a combination MP3 player and voice recorder.

It arrived yesterday afternoon. I spent a few hours last night and this morning playing with it, installing the software, and trying to get the thing to work. The voice recorder works, but I gotta crank up the volume to hear it. I plugged it in to my computer, which recognized the device but didn't (and still doesn't) assign it a drive letter. I can plug it into my laptop, which does recognize it and assigns it a drive letter. I tried copying MP3 files to it, but it stopped at around the fourth or fifth track.

I went to Creative's support page. What they suggested didn't work. I couldn't find a phone number for their support, but I found a place where I could send them an email.

I'll play with it some more, but if I don't get results within a week, I think I'll try to send it back.

Has anyone else had similar problems with their MP3 players?

Fwiw, the main devices I've used for listening to mp3's on the go have been a (now-retired) Palm Tungsten E, an iPod shuffle, and the iPhone. Since all had proprietary software to handle the download/upload/sync processes, my experiences may not apply to what you're doing, but with the Palm I occasionally had problems loading both mp3's and pdf's to the SD memory card, and difficulties now and then with the Palm recognizing the loaded data. Since I didn't have to reset the Palm very many times, it wasn't a big deal to me.

As for voice recording, I understand there are ways to hack the iPhone today, but I look forward to third-party software to be able to do so in the future.

No, but...

All of our MP3 players have been IPods, and Apple does a good job. The don't record though, so they wouldn't meet your requirements.

Oh, and they do work fine with Ubuntu and a GPL replacement for ITunes. I haven't tried installing ITunes under Wine. Itunes works fine on my Mac. Wonder why .
