Marcon is a no-go......

Even though I am now gainfully employed for the next several weeks, the paychecks won't be rolling in right away. I had been toying with the idea of attending Marcon for Saturday only, but since I won't have the money for a convention registration, I won't be attending Marcon this year.


It goes deeper than that. For some time, I've felt that the local filk community just isn't my tribe. It seems to me that my presence at filk cons is merely tolerated. And maybe I have overstayed my welcome there. If I'm wrong, please say so.

FWIW, itemized costs are travel gas, supper pizza, other meals on the road, (and for me, a hotel room to enable me to drive back the next day).

I wanted to go to the Acorn House Sing, but that's the same day the USS Bismarck (a Star Trek club I belong to) is having their annual picnic.

As with any large gathering, some people will be glad to see you, while those who know you less well won't really care but in no way mean it as a personal rejection. Not showing up, though, is a sure way to tilt the ratio toward the 2nd possibility.

One thing that always helps me when I'm feeling disconnected from people around me is to find a task or a person that needs me to volunteer.

Personally, I'm always glad to see you. But you knew that.

I wanted to pass this along to Jim's circle of friends so I hope that y'all pick this up and pass it along. One of Jim's close friends, Dawn Amadea, posted this on her Facebook page:

"ATTENTION DAYTON FRIENDS!!! Jim Poltrone suffered a heart attack at work yesterday. He stayed overnight at Miami Valley Hospital and is still there under observation. The battery on his phone is dying, so I'm not sure how else you can get a hold of him. Please send him love and healing energies and I'll post more info when I get it."

Prayers and good wishes will be much appreciated.

I'm sorry I won't see you there (although I now see there are medical things going on too - I'll be thinking of you!) I don't think you're unwelcome, but it's always hard to figure out what to do when a group doesn't seem right for you. (Perception and reality don't always align; I've spent a long time convinced that people didn't really like me but were just being polite. So I understand where you're coming from, at least a bit.)
