Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] allisona posted about the history of her group, Urban Tapestry, and all the people who have influenced the group from its inception until now. She also asked about everyone else's musical links.

Here's my filk music history.

I first heard about filk in 1984 from Tom Pellitieri, a member of an SF club in we were both in at the time. He sang "Murderous Little Toy" to me, among other songs. Then I moved to Dayton in 1989.

At Millennicon in 1990, I met Renee Alper, who invited me to her bi-monthly house filks, which she called "Filkaholics Anonymous". Then in 1992, I signed up for GEnie, and there was an active filk community there, in one of the SFRT boards. That's how I first got to meet folks like Judith Hayman, Lynn Gold, the members of Urban Tapestry, Mark Peters, and many others whom I can't recall at this time (without going back to my archives). At Marcon in 1995, I was in an instaband with Kathy Mar and performed "Big Yellow Taxi".

Along the way, I met folks like Joe Ellis (a Dayton-area filker best known for his song "Robofilker"), Phil Textor (who now leads the Chamberfilk ensemble), Gary Ehrlich, Mary Ellen Wessels, Barry & Sally Childs-Helton, Tom Smith, Steve Macdonald, and many others.

Renee and I parted ways back in 1997, for reasons I won't go into here. Since then, my participation in filk has fallen off. My playing and songwriting have languished as well.

I'd like to get back into the swing of things, but I have a daughter to raise (with the help of her mother), an uncertain employment future, lots of stuff to do at home (namely, the ongoing decluttering project), and a parent to keep track of.
