How many of you have a personal mission statement? How many out there have answers to "Who are you? What do you want? Why are you here? Where are you going?"
The subject line of this post states my current mission statement. (Yes, it changes over time. At one time it was "I create a world where people live the tenets of their faith, not through the words they quote or labels they apply to themselves.")
So, what does a world of honesty look like? I see it as a world without lies, deceit, deception, distortion, spin, and bullshit. Everyone is honest with each other and tells the truth.
Why is this important to me? Why do I want a world of honesty? I've seen and heard of too many people -- myself included -- who have been hurt, either emotionally or financially, through dishonest people, or dishonest methods. I want to put an end to this hurt. I want to leave this world a better place than it was when I came into it. I want to make a difference.
What can I do about it? Ultimately, probably not much. I'm just one salmon swimming upstream. But "if it is to be, it is up to me". All I can do is live my life the way I see fit. I don't bamboozle or bullshit people. (And if I tried, it would be so flimsy and transparent that nearly everyone will call me on it. I suck at lying, so why bother?)
A good mission statement has two parts: vision and action. What is the type of world I want to be in? And what am I going to do to achieve it? Both parts need to be present. There is a Japanese proverb that says "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare."
