A couple of weeks ago, a DiBella's Subs opened up near me, in the southern suburbs of Dayton, Ohio. I first heard of this Rochester, NY-based chain on my trips to Buffalo. They have a store on Niagara Falls Blvd. and Braxmar Rd. in Tonawanda, a block north of the Boulevard Mall, where a Burger King used to be. And today, I finally had lunch there (at the one near me in Dayton): a medium Godfather sandwich, with all the veggies, chips, and a drink. All for just over $10.00.

The verdict: I liked it. A lot. They make their own sub rolls on site, and they're crusty on the outside and soft on the inside -- just the way I like them. There was plenty of meat as well. I'd definitely go back. And I'd give them an A.

So.....what sub shops are in town near me? And how do they rate?

Subway. They're OK. Their sub rolls aren't crusty; they're a little on the gummy side. And the sandwiches seem to be a little bland and lacking character. C.

Jersey Mike's. I love their #13 (the Original), prepared "Mike's Way" -- shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, olive oil, red wine vinegar?, oregano, salt, and pepper. The bread is hit-or-miss, though. If it's left out too long, it will get dry. And I don't care for a sandwich with dry bread. A-.

Jimmy John's. I first heard of this chain on a trip to Miami University, in Oxford. They're known for "freaky fast" sandwich preparation. I'd estimate somewhere between 60 and 90 seconds for them to make a sandwich. I like their Vito and Italian Night Club sandwiches. And the signs on the wall are entertaining. B+.

Penn Station. It's a regional chain, based in Cincinnati. Their Dagwoods, if prepared "East Coast Style" and cold (not grilled), are decent. They're best known for their Philly cheese steak sandwiches. I usually get mine with provolone, peppers, onions, and mushrooms. (Although I'm told the "official" Philly cheese steak sandwiches, like you would get at Pat's or Gino's, use Cheez Whiz.) B.

Potbelly. Not bad, but a little far for me. I have to go up to the the Brown St. strip (near UD -- the University of Dayton) for the nearest one. B-.

Subby's. A local chain. I don't care for their sandwiches at all. I think they put mayonnaise on everything by default. D.

DiSalvo's Deli. A standalone -- not a chain -- right next to Mamma DiSalvo's restaurant in Kettering. Excellent sandwiches. And personalized service. Ron may not remember my name, but he remembers me on sight. A+.

Tuscano's Subs, affiliated with Noble Romans' Pizza. I wasn't terribly impressed with their sandwich the one time I went, and I haven't been back. C-.
