Continuing a thread from an earlier entry.

Schnucks supermarkets, St. Louis MO. I guess it rhymes with "shucks". But it sounds awfully close to "schmucks" or "schnooks", which are pejorative Yiddish words.

The Schlotzsky's Deli chain, based in Austin, TX. As their logo says, "Funny name. Serious sandwich". I guess it's a funny name if you're from Austin. To me, it's a nice-sounding Russian Jewish name that I'd expect to see at a kosher deli gracing the streets of Manhattan or the other 4 boroughs of NYC. And the food's good too.

They were decent when I was there, but that was 25 years ago. They were most comparable to Dominick's in Chicago: a very slightly upscale chain that wasn't part of a larger conglomerate. (Upscale as compared to National or Kroger, that is.)
