You know that spring is on its way when Sports Illustratedmagazine rolls out its annual swimsuit issue. This has been a February staple since 1964. Many famous models have graced its pages over the years. Their names have become part of our popular culture.
Years ago, when I was in college and thereafter, I used to buy this issue on the newsstands. It was like a rite of passage for young men such as myself. I wasn't very careful with the first issue I had (in 1983), but in later years, I would store the issues in plastic bags, as I would a comic book. (I started collecting comic books in 1984.)
I've often thought how much these back issues would be worth. So tonight, I did some searching, and found two sites which had back issues for sale: backissues.com and swimsuit-issue.com. That 1983 issue, with Cheryl TIegs on the cover, goes for about $20 in excellent condition.
I haven't bought the swimsuit issue in years. It's probably time I liquidate my collection. I could easily put them up on eBay. (Others have already done so.)
