From [livejournal.com profile] dagonell.

This is about believing in someone. If you, who read this right now, believe that I have got what it takes to not only survive, but to thrive and succeed at what I set out to do, leave a comment here saying that you believe in me. Then, put this into your journal, and see just how deep your support structure really goes. You may be very surprised at who's out there rooting for you.

I actually spent time pondering this last night. It wasn't the request, but the fact that it was a meme which sent me off. I'm not really sure why.

Good for you for knowing what you need and requesting it. I just...I don't know why it should make a difference to me that instead of being your words and your need expressed, but a meme that makes a difference. I suppose because when it's one person asking, and one person receiving, it's a genuine outpouring of support. When everyone's doing it, it's all set up to be a popularity contest. I think that's the difference, in my head. (And, seeing how misearbly I came out in any sort of popularity contest in school, I can see why this might have some nasty resonances for me.)

Again, it is good that you've decided to ask outright for support, since I know from experience that when one is feeling down, one is caught inside one's own head and can't see what regard others actually hold for one.
