There's talk about the Government giving every taxpaying American a check for $800 in order to stimulate the economy. My reckoning is that in most cases, the money will be used to pay off debt -- credit cards, home equity loans, etc. -- instead of making new purchases.

On an unrelated note, I don't think Dr. Phil should have blabbed about Britney's condition. Just because one is a celebrity doesn't mean they lose their right to privacy.

Sounds like standard political logic:

We Must Do Something.
X Is Something.
Therefore, We Must Do X.

RE: Dr. Phil and Britney

Uh, yes. First, he should be giving Brit the common courtesy of minding his own business. Second, an MH professional at any level is not supposed to talk about their clients with anyone outside of their treatment team without express consent. So, Dr. Phil was violating the spirit if not the letter of patient confidentiality. Of course, this is Dr. Phil we're talking about. Someone needs to shrink his swollen head.

Frankly, I agree. But my inner cynic wonders: since, due to sanctions for unethical behaviour, Dr. Phil McGraw is no longer licensed to practice psychology and therefore cannot technically *have* patients, why would he ever consider himself in any way bound by HIPAA or Dr/Patient confidentiality?

Well, no kidding. And this time he clearly, clearly suggested that he was providing some kind of therapy to either her or her family. In the past he's skirted that by using the disclaimer on his show that it was for entertainment purposes only. He's been pretty careful, but just as he gave up his license in Texas after he engaged in misconduct with a patient--the provable part being that he gave her a job (she also claims he was handsy with him) you just figure he couldn't keep himself from getting in hot water again.

I was tempted to report him and I was thrilled with a Clinical Psychologist did it. Even better than some random gossip junkie!

I'm lost. What's her condition?

The latest is that she claims to have Multiple Personality Disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder) but when Dr. Phil got into the picture and into her hospital room without her consent she was leaving after a 5150 which came about when she locked herself in the bathroom with one her kids and wouldn't come out. The cops talked to her for 3 hours and then had her sent to the hospital. Back then (last week?) it was speculated that she is bipolar or possibly mainly manic.

I feel terrible for her children. This isn't something that they'll never hear about as they grow up. I am glad that the judge removed her visitation for the time being...maybe she'll care enough when she crashes to get help.

What amazes me, too, is that she is hanging around with a Paparazzo and he seems to be enabling all of her bizarre excursions and escorting her through all of her whims. Sound like Howard Stern enough for ya? Wait, didn't a photographer father Anna Nicole's baby?

It's tragic that she's sick, but as an adult and mom I believe she has an obligation to do everything she can to be the most stable she can get for their sake as well as hers.

ARe you sorry I asked? Isn't it pathetic that I know?

I'm not sorry I asked, I was keeping up with it until this past week. I'm glad you followed the story cuz someone had to, LOL! Honestly, it's a relief this is coming out, at least there's an explanation behind her insane behavior. If the little girls who idolize her see that she IS sick and not just acting out they will have a better understanding that her behavior really ISN'T appropriate for a celebrity.

The kids - once they are old enough to understand what's going on - will roll with it. Kids are resilient little creatures and by that time they will be stabilized with or without her.

I do blame the "yes" people (aka enablers) that surround her as well as her family for not doing an intervention before this got so out of hand. This woman is spinning out of control and there is no one who seems to be willing to put on the breaks. It's a good thing the judge is at least level headed enough to see this.

Thanks for updating me.

As for Dr. Phil, he needs to get kicked the heck off the air and out of the headlines. He's plauged the medical profession long enough with his quasi-advise.

I agree with you on both issues.

As far as Dr. Phil goes, he has even stated on the news today that his blabbing was a bad idea on his part. It was immoral and unethical a fact that he has to and sais he does own up to.

I feel sorry for Britney mental melt downs are hard to live through, having it all in the public eye and being excerbated by the photo-nazi's has to be even harder to live through. On the other hand, I'm glad her kids are out of her custody. While i believe that parents should both have equal access to children, I don't believe that kids should be expossed to her kind of turmoil, nor should they be so indangered as they seem to be whenever they are with her.
I hope she doesn't have any more kids untill she's got her life back on track.

Someone on a board mentioned that she really escalated when Jamie Lynne's pregnancy was announced. I fear that she will try to get pregnant to steal Jamie Lynne's thunder.

The Pap she's hanging with is married, but I can't imagine that would stop him--it sure isn't stopping him from hanging out with her all night in hotels.

The untax and spend

I think you are completely right. Just because people get $800 from the government, it isn't going to make them feel "RICH!" enough to spend it. In fact, just the idea that Bush would give private citizens a tax break suggests what a terrible state the economy is really in, LOL.

It's the same rhetoric that the neoliberal, free trade politicians like to push. If I may, think back to 911. What was one of the first things that we were all urged to do....SHOP! And we did, and we can some say for the most part, we "recovered." You are right. The little bit of extra cash will indeed be paid on absolutes, and not a Wii. At least, I won't be.

The government has done this "give the minions some money" tactic in the past. It didn't work then and it ain't gonna work this time. And where is this money coming from that they intend to disburse? Hmm, maybe another plundered account like Social Security. No, wait, can't be from Social Security cuz they've already stolen that money for war games and other crap that dumbass Bish and BOTH political parties deem necessary.

As for Dr. Phil... He's a Jerry Springer in disguise. But then most anything aligned with Oprah is self serving and sensationalistic. I read that Oprah can fire Dr. Phil anytime since she owns his show and determines if and when he is on air. She should have fired his ass long ago and why she's waiting to do so now... must be money money money. But then I'm, also, of the opinion that Oprah's show can disappear.
