As I mentioned in an earlier post, a group of protestors came to our local Pagan Pride Day. Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] zorya_thinks posted an entry entitled "Such hate" which included links to two clips on YouTube featuring these protestors. (They also protested in front of a Catholic church the same day, claiming Catholicism is a false religion.) Apparently they had their own video cameras and posted their efforts on YouTube for all to see.

I simply cannot understand the mindset of these people. These are the ones I call "Xians".

What causes people to go out and spread their version of the Gospel in this manner? Certainly not love. Is someone keeping score as to how many souls they save? (As if that truly matters.) It may seem an invitation to them, but to me and others on the receiving end, it feels and sounds like a hard-sell. That turns me off.

Now, I know that not all Christians believe in the same manner as the Xians. For me, someone who is a Christian is one who lives in a Christ-like manner, regardless of denomination. Not one of these Jeremiah wannabes screaming hellfire and damnation to anyone who is not like them.

I've also found in my life that the most vocal critics of something are the ones who know the least about it. The Xians may protest us, but have they ever heard of the Wiccan Rede? Probably not.

I have friends of many other faiths -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Unitarian, pagan, and atheist. There are so many that I'm convinced there is no such thing as a One True Way. Besides, God is too big to fit in one religion. (It sure makes life interesting when I send out holiday cards in December, matching a card to a person's faith.)

My wish: If I had access to some alien (specifically Vorlon) technology, and if I had the chutzpah, I'd like to go up to these Xians and ask them, "What are you doing in MY name?" I'd like to make them think the Second Coming has already happened and that their Lord is standing in front of them, witnessing their actions and handing out judgments on the spot. Heh. That'll put the fear of God in them.

you're so good; I have been striving to make my cards a fruit salad of symbology instead. :)

Seriously, I hear you. This is why I left Christianity, because the branch I'm from is rather like the protesters you describe.
