I really want my candidate to win. But I need to be prepared for the other outcome to happen: The opposing candidate wins.

Those of you on the left: Can you live with a McCain presidency?

Those of you on the right: Can you live with an Obama presidency?

Discuss.

Honestly jim. I dont' know.

I do not think that McCain will have the support of congress and therfore he will be rendered a lame duck pres.

However. I do not think the country can take 4 more years of bush policies. and regardless of what he says about not beign GWB his record speaks for itself. his decision making abilities (or lack therof) speak for themselves as well.

We arent' rulign out Canada if McCain wins - we have freinds there that are willign to take us in and sponser us

Can I live with it? Yes.

Will I enjoy it? It depends on what he does. I've seen one proposal come before the Democrats in hearings in Congress that would gut my 401(k) plan. I had hopes of retiring someday...

But I'd like to believe that the Democrats in Congress aren't stupid enough to pass such a bill. Or that the Republicans in the Senate would be able to filibuster it.

I don't believe that my heart would actually stop beating if McCain, or even Palin, took the oath of office, and I don't believe I have it in me to leave behind the things I have to live for here, so I can't see myself actually emigrating. I doubt that I could ever seriously hope to see anything like the America I thought I grew up in again, though. Politically, I would be a patient who's received a terminal diagnosis and is just waiting for the end hoping it won't hurt too much.

I don't have a lot of confidence that a President Obama would actually be able to fix the problems this country faces, but I believe he would actually try, and I believe McCain would just keep digging. If the Republicans can hold the White House after 8 years of the worst administration in our history, the only way they will ever lose it would be through a real schism between the rich bastard faction and the theocracy faction. Assuming, of course, that there is still an actual election and an opposition party to fill the void.

Whenever I have come to a tough moment in my life, I remind myself that my ancestors survived being dragged from their homes and families, abducted across the sea, sold as farm equipment, beaten, raped, and abused. They kept going and had children and grandchildren or I wouldn't be here. So if they survived, then I can live with whomever becomes president.

That doesn't mean I don't have a distinct preference. *grin*

I probably could live with a McCain presidency. It's a Palin presidency that worries me. Were that to happen, I'd probably be giving 'leaving the country' serious consideration. Religious freedom means that much, and she represents a faction of the Elephant party that doesn't know what that means. A deep-seated feeling of "Country Gone Nuts" would be taking me over. If I did decide to jump ship, it would probably be to Germany or the Netherlands if I did. So I probably should start seriously saving up, make Rosetta Stone rich, and start making some connections.

I'm giving some very strong consideration to putting together a work visa and go live and teach in England or an English-speaking European area for a couple of years. I know this sounds extreme but politics is only one reason I'm considering this.

I'm living in a Victorian farm-house. I'm far from 'civilization', I've got a year's worth of meat and groceries. The house heats with firewood. Yeah, I should be able to baricade the house and survive the riots...

As opposed to what - dying? Certainly. As opposed to moving? Probably. As opposed to bitching at length? I doubt it. :)

Jim

My life has never been seriously impacted by who won or lost a presidential election. Life goes on. I suspect my life will be more directly impacted by Issue 24 on Mental health funding or my local school district levy than by the national race. The local races impact my wallet directly and immediately. I have been a success in life under Republican presidents and Democrat presidents. I have also voted for the losing side more often than not so its really not a big deal to me. I control my own destiny and don't require help from the President to live a happy successful life.
