I have plenty of tapes that have obscure songs on them. Some of them are in the Living In Oblivion collection. One of my long-term projects is to take the cassettes I have and convert them into MP3 files.

I don't have all these songs, but they would be nice to have in a collection. )

Several years ago, EMI Records put out a series of CDs that featured some rather obscure hits from the 1980s. Some of the songs were from one-hit or two-hit wonders. Some of the songs barely made it into the American or British top 40. And there are a few better-known hits in the collection.

The series is named "Living In Oblivion: The 80s Greatest Hits". While I technically wouldn't call them "greatest hits" -- most such compilations are based on sales, airplay, and chart position -- many of the songs were familiar to me, and some were brand new. These are the songs that rarely get any airplay nowadays. [Updated 16:30] Here's a discography.

The local library had volumes 1-3. Listening to them, they brought back some great memories: high school, college, the fraternity house, parties, going to clubs, and road trips. Thanks to half.com, I'm in the process of obtaining the 5-CD set, disc by disc. If I can avoid it, I won't pay full price for CDs ever again.

If you were to come up with a CD compilation of obscure 80s hits, what songs would you include?

Meh.

My inner soundtrack for this afternoon, based on one of the things going on in my life right now. I think this song is quite apropos for the situation.

Two weeks after installing Linux on the "new" laptop (a Dell Latitude CPx J), everything is mostly working, except for the PCMCIA modem and wireless cards. I have posts in Ubuntu Forums, but there haven't been many responses to my questions.

To recap: The hardware finds my modem, but the software doesn't. Supposedly there's a driver I can use, but I don't know how to install it. As for the network card, I get the bluse swirl for about 60 seconds while it tries to join a network, and then it stops.

...I'll take a quick 5-minute break. Usually the server comes up in about 2 minutes; for the past couple of days it's been taking 15-20 minutes to come up.

I could go to the UU church later tonight to play some board and card games. Or I could have dinner with the Usual Suspects. Or I can just stay home.

This weekend, I need to continue going through Box 81 and the receipts from 1997. I might even bring a small pile of stuff to go through to the Bismarck meeting on Saturday night.

I just found out that a friend-of-an-LJ-friend is in town visiting family. I sent them a message, but they probably won't get it until they're home. Besides, I don't think that person knows me well enough.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in exile or isolation. And sometimes I feel like I spend too much time socializing.

This morning, it was rainy, and I dozed well after I should have. I came into work later than usual. Somewhere along the way, I pulled a neck/shoulder muscle. Even though I took an Aleve, I'm still feeling the pain.

I think my cat wanted me to stay at home today. I should have listened.

My current de-cluttering project has been another box of printouts from 1988. This one had old email messages and Usenet posts. It's tough getting rid of the old correspondence. But some of these folks I haven't seen or heard from since then.

What I've saved so far: An April Fool's joke I posted to rec.music.gaffa nearly 20 years ago. Even though the first letters of the first 10 lines spelled "April Fool", a lot of people missed that and mistook it for real. (I should scan it, maybe OCR it, and repost it here.)

This is why I don't read many books these days; I'm too busy reading through old stuff I probably should get rid of.

Shout-outs: Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] tigertoy!

As much as I'd like to go to this filk con -- and I haven't been there since FKO 13 several years ago -- I just can't swing it financially. No passport, no money for a passport, no money for a con, etc. :(

Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever be able to afford to go to cons again and see people I haven't seen in months or years.

So there's another new radio station in town: Fly 92.9. Their slogan is "We play anything".

I'd like to challenge that.

In the past two weeks of listening to them in the car, I've yet to hear any Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Bjork, Gowan, Kim Mitchell, Saga, Marillion, Renaissance, the Grateful Dead, Phish, or John Valby. And I probably never will because these artists are too obscure for the average American radio listener. Either that or they've never had any top 40 hits in the States. (Okay, there's "Running Up That Hill" and "Touch of Grey", but that's about it.)

Despite my quibble, I do like listening to the station. They're not limited to any particular genre or era. (I've noticed the Eagle doesn't play anything released after 1979.) I've heard songs on there I haven't heard in years, or have never heard at all. But it seems that the only limiting factor in air play is that the song must have cracked the top 40.

I'll keep listening. And when I get tired of it, I'll change the station.

Last month, I was asked to sign -- and signed -- a petition to allow voters to choose to put a casino in the state of Ohio, in Clinton County. The proponents have been on local talk radio, and have also put up a website: myohionow.com.

I probably won't ever go to the place -- I know enough about game theory that the house always wins -- but I'm not gonna stop other people from gambling away their money. Besides, people from Ohio are already going across state lines to Indiana to gamble. Let's keep the money in the state.

I just noticed that the post I made a few hours ago is dated March 19, 4:50pm -- the time and date of the system clock at the time I posted. That obviously wasn't right, and it's been fixed.

I went to Panera for dinner, with the Linux laptop in tow. I was able to detect their wireless internet, but I couldn't connect to it. I tried several times. I think there's something more I need to do before it will work. (At home, I can detect my neighbors' wireless connections, and all but one have them locked down.)

As for the boycott, I sort of participated. I read the posts of the people who chose not to participate, but I didn't start responding until about 4 pm. Plus today's posts are the first I made since Monday.

My test results and observations from the past week. )

I'm posting this from the new laptop, on which I installed Ubuntu Linux 7.10. I still haven't figured out how to get the PCMCIA modem to work. But they were throwing out a USRobotics Sportster 33.6 FAxmodem at work. And so I thought about using it for the interim. A little twiddling with wvdial, and editing the configuration file, and I'm online.

Now to go to my favorite wi-fi hangout and test the network card.

This is a repost from five years ago, with some edits. My opinion hasn't changed much since then.

This weekend is Millennicon, a science fiction convention in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Although its goal is to be a literary con (face it, authors are cheaper to bring in than stars), there are often many media fans there as well.

So, if I'm a fan, why am I not there? )

This is when March Madness begins. The conference tournaments for men's and women's college basketball. My alma mater is the #12 seed in the MAC tournament; they play #5 Miami. One of my co-workers is a UD (Univ. of Dayton) fan, who just won in overtime against St. Louis. He has his radio tuned in so all of us can hear the game, whether we like it or not.

This is about the only time in the year I pay attention to basketball, either college or professional. I stopped following basketball when John Y. Brown moved the Braves out of Buffalo, brought them to San Diego, and renamed them the Clippers. (They've since moved up the coast to Los Angeles.)

Today's shout-outs: Happy belated birthday [livejournal.com profile] almeda! Sorry I missed it earlier.

After spending yesterday sequestered at home -- there were plenty of things to do to keep me occupied -- I managed to get out today. The plowing contractor took care of our condo complex this morning. I had to dig my car out, but that was no big deal. The snow was relatively light. Then I drove to R's place to dig her car out. It's a lot easier when someone else does the plowing; there's not as much to dig out.

Spent the afternoon with M. We went out for lunch, then came back home. Then M wanted a sled. So we went to one of the local hardware stores, and to Wal-Mart. But no sled was found. We settled on a $10 toy set.

I'm surprised the roads were as clear as they were. I think today's clear and sunny weather helped.

Some time ago, I mentioned that I had dibs on an old Pentium III laptop at work. Earlier this week, we cleaned out two cubicles in preparation for new employees, and a lot of old and unused computer things were thrown out. One of the "things" was an old Gateway E4000 desktop, which I was using until last year, when the hard drive started to fail on it. I managed to vulch that machine, along with some mice, a power cord, a modem, and some phone and network cables. And Jeanne (our admin assistant) said that I could have the laptop.

And so, I took it home on Thursday night.

While cleaning out the carrying case, I came across a copy of Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Service Pack 5, and some old manuals. But that's not what I'm going to install on the laptop. Once I get a hard drive for it, I'm installing Ubuntu 7.10. I've already ran it from the laptop's CD-ROM, and it appears to work nicely. Especially the games. I'll just need to know how to install new hardware, when it comes time to do so -- floppy drive module, modem, network card, wireless network card, USB devices, etc.

For the Linux geeks out there -- and I really should make a filter -- how easy or difficult would it be to install these devices? I'm not expecting plug-and-play, which is one of Windows' main selling points (ease of use). Are drivers available?

Oh yeah. If you want to be included in my Linux filter, post a reply to this message. I'm already planning to include [livejournal.com profile] autographedcat, [livejournal.com profile] bikergeek, and [livejournal.com profile] urban_terrorist.

The boss dismissed us early yesterday. We left at noon, and had lunch at One Eyed Jack's, which was still open. I took surface streets home -- North Fairfield to Indian Ripple to Shroyer to Far Hills -- instead of I-675. The roads in Beavercreek were lousy. I don't know if it's because Greene County is more rural than Montgomery County. It took me about an hour and a half to get home.

I shoveled the steps and a neighbor's steps when I got home. I then made a run to Kroger to pick up some meds, and to do some shopping. The freezer is full and I need to start eating meals that are inside.
A few hours later, it looked as if I hadn't shoveled at all. I stayed inside last night and watched a hockey game. Once again, the Blue Jackets lost. :(

Today I cooked some sausage and eggs for breakfast, along with some coffee. This afternoon, I'll probably have lentil soup, and dinner will be a frozen dinner.

I still have all my utilities -- electricity, water, telephone, cable TV. For that, I'm thankful. There are some folks in Darke County (northwest of me) who have not had any electricity since their ice storm earlier this week.

It's Friday. I should be happy. But I'm not. I'm feeling rather grumpy.

The winter storm that the weather forecasters warned us about last night came in this morning, just as I was getting ready to leave home. I-675 was a mess; I don't think I did above 40 mph while on it. Someone hit a light pole at the Indian Ripple Rd. exit. But I made it into work.

I got my tax refund today, but I can't transfer any of it to my savings account because my savings account was closed for inactivity yesterday. In an effort to reopen the account, I called the bank's help line, and they told me I need to take care of that at a local branch. (Well, if their interest really was in me, they'd take care of my every little request, and not try to gouge or inconvenience me. Hurm.)

Today, my life is like watching a bad movie, and I want to shut it off and take it back to where I got it. Hopefully this day will go a little better after lunch.

Back in January, I purchased a Euro-Pro Steam Bottle (model SC618W) from Big Lots for $20. I've worked with steam cleaners before -- I have a larger unit -- and was hopeful that I could use this product to help clean the kitchen and other tight places, where my regular steam cleaner couldn't fit.

Since I purchased it, I've had nothing but trouble with this product. I've called their help line twice, and both times they gave me tips in order to try to get the product to work properly -- hold the trigger down while filling it, use an attachment, squeeze harder. So far, nothing has worked. At this point, I want to send the unit back for repair or replacement.

I don't know if there's an air bubble or some other blockage in the line. If I had a twist wie or wire long enough, I'd like to insert it into the nozzle to clear up the jam.

I just looked on EPinions.com and saw that other people have had problems with this particular product.
