How is this like my life?
Apr. 23rd, 2011 08:18 amOnce I get all my stuff together and organized, I'm afraid I'll end up like this fellow. Is that my ultimate goal in life? Heck, no!
But seriously....this picture came from an article in the April 2008 issue of IEEE Spectrum which discusses the stockpiling of obsolete electronics.
Oh well. Better to have an organized warehouse filled with old electronics than a disorganized landfill with the same old electronics.

This past weekend, I took a trip up to Buffalo NY to visit my mother and a few friends and relatives.
Fri 4/15: Took care of some last-minute errands. Left Dayton at around 10:30. Weather was nice; the roads were dry and clear. Arrived at the Olive Garden in Amherst NY a little after 6:30pm. Some friends of mine had gathered to celebrate Todd's birthday. Reconnected with Matt, Rhonda, and Steve, whom I haven't seen or heard from in years.
Sat 4/16: It rained all day. Did a little shopping. Had lunch with Sal. Had dinner and coffee with Liz and Louis. Our initial venue was Santora's, but it was packed, as the Sabres/Flyers game was on. Went around the corner to Jack's Pub. Then went to Coffee Culture.
Sun 4/17: It snowed. Had breakfast with Rich. My cousins Steve and Carol came over and visited for about an hour. Then visited my aunt Angie, with whom I had dinner.
Mon 4/18: Left Buffalo around 10:30. Stopped at the Lodi Station factory outlet mall and picked up a couple of pairs of jeans. Met up with
athenawindsong at her place for about an hour. Then had dinner at Outback. Arrived home around 8:45.

Hopelessly disorganized....
Apr. 2nd, 2011 12:06 amI spent this evening shredding old receipts and sorting out more bills.
Earlier this week, I spent a couple of hours sorting out bills from last year, and going through receipts from 2000.
It seems that I spend an awful lot of time chasing down little slips of paper.
It doesn't help that I have papers in every room of the house. I need an office where I can keep all these papers in one place.
I think I need an administrative assistant.
I used to be so organized. Now I'm just overwhelmed.

TW-3 for March 18-20, 2011....
Mar. 20th, 2011 08:54 pmFri 3/18: Slept in until about 3pm. Sent out a few resumes. Helped out friends John and Cassie pull out burr bushes from the south field. Got covered in burrs. Had to run to Kroger to get a slicker brush, which is the best thing I know of to remove burrs from clothing.
Sat 3/19: Skipped Millennicon yet again. Drove to Indianapolis (and back) for
min0taur's mother's memorial service at UUI in Indianapolis.
Sun 3/20: Went to UU services. Then picked up M and went to Beavercreek to help John and Cassie shear some sheep. 5 sheep were shorn -- Valentine, Lambchop, Louise, Thelma, and Shawn. Then had some dinner.

Millennicon and FKO are no-goes.....
Mar. 14th, 2011 09:40 pmThis coming weekend is Millennicon, in Cincinnati. I thought about going on Saturday, only to see
filkertom and other local fans. But I'm still unemployed and don't have money for conventions. And if I did have the money....I probably wouldn't go anyway. They lost my convention business years ago. I'm quite sure I chronicled about it here some time ago.
The weekend of April 1-3 is FilKONtario, Again, I don't have the money to attend, and I don't have the money for a passport. Once of these years, I'd like to return. It's been 8 years since I last attended a FKO.

TW-3 for March 11-13, 2011.....
Mar. 14th, 2011 02:12 pmFri 3/11: Slept in. Spent an hour fliging resumes. Got a call from friend Marie, who needed help pulling burr "bushes" out of a field that will soon be used for her sheep. So I helped her and her son out for a few hours. Then went to friend Rick's place and hung out for a couple of hours.
Sat 3/12: ( Cut for medical TMI. ) Went on a road rally with some friends from the USS Bismarck. We drove all over Middletown, looking for historical markers and answering questions. Then had our anniversary dinner and the change of command ceremony. Set the clocks ahead.
Sun 3/13: Slept in. Missed UU services. Picked up M and took her to Sugarcrek Reserve. It's been a long time since I was last there. I'm sorry to say that the middle sister of the Three Sisters had fallen down three years ago, and I didn't know. Then we went to Cox Arboretum, dinner at Bob Evans, and home for computer games.

The census meme.....
Mar. 11th, 2011 12:54 amOver here in the States, we do the census in years ending in a 0. But I suspect that in some countries, they're done in years ending with 1.
Anyway, I'll play.
2011: Still in the condo. Divorced for 4 years. Currently unemployed. Worried that I might lose the condo due to foreclosure. Marcus is still around. Bubastis and Lady died in 2002. Oreo died in 2004. Merlin died in 1997. Added Mercury 8 years ago.
2001: In the condo for nearly 3 years. Happily married to my [first] wife for 2 years. Working as a contractor at GE AIrcraft Engines. Adopted two cats, Marcus and Merlin, in the summer of '99. Bubastis, Oreo, and Lady are still around.
1991: Been in an apartment in Kettering for nearly 2 years now. Dating a woman in Columbus whom I met via GEnie. Working for Battelle. Adopted Bubastis the previous year.
1981: Still at my parents' home. Counting down the days until my high school graduation.
1971: Liiving with my parents in Tonawanda, NY. In the 2nd grade at the local elementary school.

Cats with thumbs!
Mar. 9th, 2011 02:07 pmFound a funny commercial online this past week. It's for the English dairy Cravendale.
Why do cats stare when you're pouring milk?

Nope. Not yet.
Mar. 5th, 2011 04:38 pmHad two interviews on Thursday.
One was with a homebuilder based in northern Kentucky. They were looking for a front-end web developer, using XML, XSLT, and Adobe Flex, for their marketing efforts. I'm more of a back-end person. And they found someone else who was more proficient in this skillset than me. (I thought I was a longshot to begin with.)
The other was with a local consulting firm who had an out-of-state client wanting to do some data migration. While the interview went well, the client got a case of cold feet and is re-revaluating their project. So this one's on hold.
In the meantime, I'm helping out a friend rebuild a computer system for one of his clients. The motherboard on it -- and presumably the CPU as well -- went kablooey. He was able to order a replacement motherboard, which came in yesterday. The motherboard was installed last night, but it doesn't seem to like having two video cards installed. I'll play around with it some more this weekend.

A day of mental flossing....
Mar. 2nd, 2011 06:30 pmSlept in this morning. My mind was filled with dreams, visions, and hallucinations. It was like a core dump. Lots of images in rapid succession. One that stuck out was an auto racer named Sakaki, who got himself disqualified from a race for some reason I can't remember.
Maybe my mind's clearing out junk and detritus to make room for new stuff to be loaded.
On the job front, I heard back from my two interviews last week. Both companies have decided to pass on me. So I have two more strikeouts to my credit. I'm left wondering, "What makes me so unattractive to potential clients?"

Continuing where I left off......
Tue 2/22 (cont'd): Skipped my mens' group and went to visit Dan and Jody (aka
ethansmom) and their son Ethan at Great Wolf Lodge, where they were staying this week. Had dinner with them and played a few rounds of Uno.
Wed 2/23: Don't remember what I did during the day. Had choir practice. Affterward, went back down for another visit to Dan, Jody, and Ethan.
Thu 2/24: Drove to Columbus for an interview with Chemical Abstracts Service. I didn't know how the weather was going to be, so I packed an overnight bag. Was hoping to meet with
athenawindsong afterward, but she was sick with bronchitis. I had dinner with
maedbh7, her mom, and her cousin. Great pot roast (I want the recipe!) and conversation ensued. Then retreated to the Red Roof Inn (I-71 and rt 161) where I was staying overnight.
Fri 2/25: It was a good thing I stayed over. There was an inch of snow on my car, and on the roads. Drove to my next interview, with Progressive Medical, in Westerville. Afterward, stopped for lunch and a trip to Half Price Books. The drive home was good; the roads were dry and clear. Picked up M from day care and dropper her off with her mom a few hours later.
Sat 2/26: Had M over for the day. Spent the day watching videos, and resting. Went to the USS Bismarck meeting afterward and cast my vote for captain.
Sun 2/27: Had M again, since I was out of town last week. We went to Entertrainment Junction and had lots of fun.

Trip to Buffalo.....
Feb. 27th, 2011 04:48 amI went up to Buffalo last weekend to visit my mother and a few friends. Here's the overdue trip report.
Overall, Mom's doing OK, but she's getting a little more forgetful. I still don't like her overbuying and stocking up on things she doesn't need right away.
Fri 2/18: Breakfast at Bob Evans. Roads were clear and dry. Made a stop at Marc's and Micro Center in Mayfield Heights (near Cleveland). Had a phone interview in the parking lot. Lunch at Jimmy John's. Arrived at around 7 PM. Went to Kegler's (the restaurant and bar in Transit Lanes) with Liz and Louis for dinner (pizza and wings), followed by karaoke.
Sat 2/19: Snow. Visited
kliklikitty and gave her a spare laptop of mine. Visited Sal, who talked about his film project, conventions, and unemployment.
Sun 2/20: Dropped off some old ACM and IEEE magazines from the 1980s for recycling. Had souvlaki for dinner at Athena's. Met with Liz and Louis for coffee (or tea) at Coffee Culture.
Mon 2/21: Had breakfast at Denny's with Bill, Darleen, and their 2 sons. I-90 was good, but when I got to I-271, it started to snow. It got heavier as I continued south. Picked up a RoomSaver coupon book. Stopped in Ashland (I-71 exit 186) and checked in to a motel to stay the night.
Tue 2/22: Had the hotel breakfast. Packed up the car and headed to Dayton. Made a side trip to Chris and Melissa's place to pick up a computer that needed fixing. Arrived home at around 2 PM.

This ain't your father's Radio Shack....
Feb. 17th, 2011 05:52 pmLast week, I accidentally broke the power cable that came with my Gear Head laptop cooling pad. Not surprising, as it has a very thin cable. It has a USB connector plug on one end and a power adapter plug on the other.
This afternoon, I stopped at my local Radio Shack to purchase either a replacement adapter plug or replacement cable. My plan was to solder the replacement adapter plug onto the cable. I was told by the clerk (who was also the manager) that they no longer carried parts. He explained that there was no money in selling electronics parts anymore, and referred me to another store -- Parts Express in Springboro. I thanked him and left.
Apparently, do-it-yourself electronics hobbyists like myself are a dying breed. Anyone out there remember Heathkit? They used to sell kits of electronics components that people would put together themselves. (I have an alarm clock from them. I was able to wire it up to display 24-hour time.) I think they got out of the DIY electronics business years ago. Now they specialize in kits for education.
It's a sad comment on the industry that it costs more to repair electronics components than it does to replace them. But it's been that way for years. Meanwhile, old and broken electronics pile up in landfills.
I used to love Radio Shack. I remember riding my bike to a local store as far back in 1979. I think I still have a breadboard, circuit components, and an SN76477 sound chip for a project I never completed. What do they sell now? Mobile phones, complete stereo systems and components, computer accessories, and the like. I might as well go to Best Buy instead.

You know that spring is on its way when Sports Illustratedmagazine rolls out its annual swimsuit issue. This has been a February staple since 1964. Many famous models have graced its pages over the years. Their names have become part of our popular culture.
Years ago, when I was in college and thereafter, I used to buy this issue on the newsstands. It was like a rite of passage for young men such as myself. I wasn't very careful with the first issue I had (in 1983), but in later years, I would store the issues in plastic bags, as I would a comic book. (I started collecting comic books in 1984.)
I've often thought how much these back issues would be worth. So tonight, I did some searching, and found two sites which had back issues for sale: backissues.com and swimsuit-issue.com. That 1983 issue, with Cheryl TIegs on the cover, goes for about $20 in excellent condition.
I haven't bought the swimsuit issue in years. It's probably time I liquidate my collection. I could easily put them up on eBay. (Others have already done so.)

Super Bowl XLV ads.....
Feb. 7th, 2011 05:53 pmI only saw half of the Big Game yesterday. I had M with me until about 7:30pm, and she doesn't like football. Instead, we watched Looney Tunes cartoons on DVD. So I missed Christina Aguilera flubbing the words on the national anthem, and most of the commercials that aired during the first half.
The first commercial I remember seeing was the one for Safe Auto, where the same guy kept getting kicked in the groin. Ouch! OK, it's somewhat funny if it happens to someone else, but painful if it happens to you. The rest of the commercials didn't peg my fun meter.
I did like the one for NFL Network which showed various clips of classic TV shows.
Did the one for Volkswagen (with a kid dressed up as Darth Vader) air?
I was at the local Buffalo Wings & Rings getting dinner when the halftime how aired. I didn't see any wardrobe malfunctions. And I had a hard time hearing the band.

Finally, an offer!
Feb. 2nd, 2011 04:12 pmOn Monday, I had an in-person interview with the functional manager of the project. We met at a local coffee shop. We talked for about 45 minutes.
On the way home, I received a call from the recruiter, informing me that they want to offer me the job (pending successful results of a background check). Later that day, I accepted.
I'm happy that I'm soon to be employed again. I'm sad to be leaving Dayton, though. I spent 21 years of my life here, and my daughter's still here. Along with a lot of friends and acquaintances I picked up while I was here.
Yesterday, I faxed in a form and my birth certificate. Today, I went for fingerprinting. Idon't have a start date yet,but I know it's going to be soon.

Iced in....
Feb. 1st, 2011 10:37 pmToday we had about 1cm (0.4 in) of freezing rain and sleet fall here in Dayton. I think more fell in places north of where I am.
I knew last night I was going to stay at home today. I had to make two trips outside, though. One was to get my oil changed at Jiffy Lube, since my oil light came on last night. The other was to get cat food at Kroger. So I went through a few more boxes, watched TV, and napped.
I'm glad I had my in-person interview in Fort Knox yesterday. I wouldn't want to drive any distance in this weather. It was a one-on-one with the functional manager at a coffee shop. And I think it went very well.
I'm guessing I will be spending tomorrow at home as well, based on the latest weather forecast.
Sure is lonely at home alone, even with the cats. :-(

The week in review....
Jan. 28th, 2011 04:04 pmIt's been a busy and productive week. I had two phone interviews and one in-person interview this past week. I went through a few more boxes I had in my storage unit. Today I dropped off old baby things at the local St. Vincent de Paul center, and two rolls of plotter paper at the Montgomery County Material Reuse Facility (McMRF).
The first phone interview was with a bank in Cincinnati. The feedback I received from them a few days later was that I didn't ask enough questions, and therefore wasn't interested in the position.
The second phone interview was with a defense contractor in Louisville, KY. This went very well. I just received word that they want me to come to Louisville for an in-person interview early next week.
The in-person interview was with a hospital in Cincinnati. I thought this interview also went very well. I like talking with my fellow computer geeks. They wanted a sample of my code, which I just sent to them this afternoon.

The decluttering continues...
Jan. 24th, 2011 06:59 pmI went through another two storage boxes today. These two boxes contained empty boxes of old computer software. I was able to pull out the corrugated cardboard, plastic, and collapse the boxes for recycling at the local dump.
In the past few weeks, I have gotten rid of several storage boxes' worth of old software boxes.
I also note that software packaging in the 1990s was very wasteful. Instead of just the CD-ROM(s), they were packaged in larger boxes, presumably to combat shoplifting and to fit better on store shelves.
So why did I hold on to these boxes? I held on to them in the event I sold the software in the future. I thought the software would be more valuable (and desirable) if the software package was complete with a box.
As for most of this software, I don't think it runs very well, if at all, on my computers anymore. So now I'm also looking for places to donate the old software. Some of it is on floppy disk, and some of it is on CD-ROM.
