Nope, still no progress on the home network issue. I took my question to techrepublic.com.

A few days ago, my Labtec mouse stopped working properly. I could move up, down, and left, but it wouldn't go to the right. It felt as if the mouse ball wasn't rolling when I moved it to the right. I had to physically pick up the mouse and try to move the pointer. When I took out the ball, I found that the rollers were working OK. I also cleaned the innards with a Q-Tip and some compressed air.

So after my interview yesterday, I stopped at Micro Center and bought a new optical mouse for $4. When I got home, I swapped out the old roller-ball mouse with the new optical mouse and things are working fine again. Although I'm going to have to get used to using a much lighter mouse. And I hope M doesn't try to pick it up and throw it around when she uses the computer.

I still can't see my "Microsoft Windows Network" when I browse under "Entire Network", even after several iterations of help from [livejournal.com profile] hms42.

If I go to Tools|FolderOptions|General and turn off common tasks, I'll see the "Entire Network" icon. When I click on it, I see the Microsoft Terminal Services and Web Client Network icons. I don't see an icon for Microsoft Windows Network. But I can still ping orac and tardis and get a response from the pings. I also enabled the icon in the "MSHOME Properties" window (MSHOME being the default name of the workgroup).

I also tried rolling back SP3, resinstalling Windows from the upgrade disk, and reinstalling SP3.

I also tried upgrading the driver on my network card.

Some history: I had a hub and ethernet cabling. The network worked fine under Windows 98. In June, I acquired a Linksys wireless router. Even though I still use dial-up, I wanted to use it as a wireless access point for the laptop. I couldn't use it that way, so I wrapped up everything and saved it for future use. Now I'm using a crossover cable.

Now that the election is over, and the results have been announced, it's time to heal the huge rift between the left and the right, and unite as Americans. This won't be easy to do -- it never is. We need to find the common ground that unites us.

I know that not all Republicans are bad. I just have issues with the party itself and the far-right wing of the party. I should spend some time looking at, and articulating, these issues. I'll save that for a future post. I should do the same with the far-left wing of the Democratic party.

For the first time in my life, I voted for the winning Presidential candidate. I'm content.

But first, I need to say something about the election results. )

The day started at 5am, when my alarm went off. I did my morning ritual and arrived at the polling place around 5:55. We had people waiting to vote when I showed up. We got the machines up and running in time. There were a few snafus at first, but we were able to iron them out. Most of these were lack of proper training for the paper ballots. It was a busy day. After the polls closed at 7:30 and we did the end-of-day procedures, we congratulated each other for a job well done.

Now, after spending 45 minutes catching up on email and LJ, I'm caught up. I think I'll turn on the news and watch the results. Or conk out.

(Oh yeah. I voted absentee because I didn't think I'd have a chance to cast my vote in person, even though I worked at the same location I usually vote in, but in a different precinct.)

I really want my candidate to win. But I need to be prepared for the other outcome to happen: The opposing candidate wins.

Those of you on the left: Can you live with a McCain presidency?

Those of you on the right: Can you live with an Obama presidency?

Discuss.

I can still ping both machines. But I still can't view files or share printers.

From the laptop's POV in My Network Places, I can see the desktop and the laptop, but I'm blocked whenever I click on the desktop machine's icon. From the desktop's POV in My Network Places, I see nothing, not even itself. If I try to create a shortcut and browse for it, I don't see "Microsoft Windows Network" under "Entire Network".

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some components. I even renamed the network and ran the Network Setup Wizard on both systems. Still nothing.

I'm stumped.

This past week, I've been getting daily emails from moveon.org asking me to sign up and volunteer at their Beavercreek office for a big push this weekend.

And i'm thinking, "Why bother?"

First, I don't live in Beavercreek. Beavercreek is in Greene County, a neighboring county which is "deep red". Lots of McCain/Palin supporters there. I'd be knocking on doors only to have them slammed in my face. Not my idea of a good way to spend my Saturday. Besides, I don't like political people knocking on my door.

Second, I'll be working as a pollworker on Tuesday. As far as I know, I need to remain impartial. I don't know if that extends to my political activities before November 4.

Third, there's no way I know of that I can express my feedback to the folks at moveon.org. I'd reply to one of their messages, but there's no guarantee that they read the email sent to the address they use to send out their notices.

So I'll just stay at home today, working on my homework that's due on Monday, and housework, and getting the backyard/patio ready for winter.

After upgrading the network card driver and turning off Norton Firewall on orac, I'm able to ping orac from both orac and tardis without the packets vanishing in to the ether. I still can't view files across my network, though, when I open My Network Places.

Which leads to another question: I currently have Norton Internet Security 2004, and only using its firewall capability. I use AVG for my antivirus protection. Do I still need Norton Internet Security? Or should I rely on Microsoft's built-in firewall? In other words, would it be safe for me to uninstall Norton Internet Security?

[Updated 22:00] I still can't see \\orac\SharedDocs on orac when I open up My Network Places. Nor can I see any systems when I try to view the computers in my workgroup. I tried making a new network place, but when I browse, I don't see "Microsoft Windows Network" under "Entire Network". I did some searching on techrepublic.com and it seems that others have had the same problem.
poltr1: (polyfusion)
I added both orac and tardis to the hosts file under C:\Windows\System32. I then tried to ping both the laptop and the desktop from both systems -- tardis from tardis, orac from tardis, tardis from orac, and orac from orac. tardis returns pings but orac does not, even from itself. I then tried pinging locahost, which worked. I also found that the LAN card had its own IP address, which I cleared out. But I'm still getting bupkis.

Thanks for the help so far. Keep it coming.

Tonight's project: Set up a peer-to-peer network between my desktop (orac) and my laptop (tardis) so I can share and copy files between them.

Both systems are running XP; tardis runs XP Pro and orac runs XP Home. Both have been upgraded to SP 3. Instead of a hub or router, I have a crossover cable connecting the two computers. The workgroup is named the same on both computers, and the IP addresses are set accordingly. tardis can see orac, but can't go to any of orac's shared directories. orac can't see itself or tardis when I look at my network places on orac. I've tried running the network setup wizard on orac, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything to fix the problem.

Would any of you out there have a solution? (Besides ditching Windows and switching to Linux. :-) )

It seems that whenever the weather is cold and overcast or rainy, I want Chinese food. I don't know why, but I usually do.

This evening was no exception. As I was driving home from Cincinnati this afternoon, I was wanting a nice hot bowl of wonton soup. I stopped at my favorite local Chinese restaurant, Hunan Wok. I ordered the General Tso's chicken combo (which adds fried rice and an eggroll). I forgot to order the soup. But I didn't need it after all. I was pleasantly full at the end of the meal.

Fall is also a time when I'm wanting nabeyaki udon, a Japanese noodle soup. The different type of mushrooms that are added give the soup a nice earthy texture and taste.

Does anyone else out there crave certain foods for different kinds of weather?

I'll try to keep things short. I no longer have gobs of time to do rambling posts, and many of you don't have time to read such posts. So I'll whittle it down to several bullet points.

Happy memories:
* Bringing [livejournal.com profile] athenawindsong to her first filk con and first OVFF
* Seeing lots of my LJ-friends in person
* The foresight of one of the attendees -- I heard it was [livejournal.com profile] akawil -- who brought green LJ ribbons to affix to our badges
* Giving a clarinet lesson to [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise, which got interesting when Katie tried to climb over Mommy
* Chamberfilk, which I thought came together nicely despite the limited number of instrumentalists
* Meeting (and later LJ-friending) [livejournal.com profile] beige_alert, [livejournal.com profile] hms42, and GoHs [livejournal.com profile] micktim and [livejournal.com profile] stevieannie
* The concerts I attended
* The conversations and the food in the con suite -- thank you Nick!
* The Interfilk auction -- always a fun time, especially when the Wenches are... um... deployed ;-)

Not-so-happy memories:
* Not spending enough face-time chatting with the LJ-friends I have
* Not meeting more people (and potential LJ-friends) -- despite the LJ ribbons, people didn't come up to me and introduce themselves*
* Having to miss all of Sunday at the con (because I was on daddy duty that day)

*This has historically been a sore point of mine. When people don't say hello to me, I take it as a sign of rejection. But after talking it over with [livejournal.com profile] athenawindsong, it seems that that's my projection. Maybe people aren't as extroverted as myself. Or they're too busy with their own lives and agendas. Or they simply don't remember me from year to year. What does this mirror for me? That I am still shy and introverted, that I often don't say hello to people. So if you're an LJ-friend of mine, and I didn't say hi to you at the con, I apologize.

Cafe press has a shop you may be interested in.

http://shop.cafepress.com/geezer-dingbat

T-shirts, buttons, yard signs, bumper stickers, and any other paraphernalia you can think of. All with a familiar design and typeface (Optima Bold, I believe).

I'm sure the folks on the other side of the aisle have similar campaign parody (parity?) paraphernalia. Heck, I remember "Sore/Loserman" from 2000.

I just wish Cafe Press merchandise wasn't so expensive.

Oh yeah.....don't wear this to the polls. In some states (including Ohio), this would give the appearance of electioneering. The circle with the 100-foot-radius of the polls is the neutral zone.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, a group of protestors came to our local Pagan Pride Day. Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] zorya_thinks posted an entry entitled "Such hate" which included links to two clips on YouTube featuring these protestors. (They also protested in front of a Catholic church the same day, claiming Catholicism is a false religion.) Apparently they had their own video cameras and posted their efforts on YouTube for all to see.

I simply cannot understand the mindset of these people. These are the ones I call "Xians".

What causes people to go out and spread their version of the Gospel in this manner? Certainly not love. )

In many public restrooms I've been in over the years, there are no paper or cloth towels provided for me to dry my hands after washing them. Instead, I gotta press the button and rub my hands under the stream of warm air. And they usually shut off about 10 seconds before my hands are totally dry. Grr argh.

Do they really save natural resources as they claim? Yes, they don't generate paper towel waste or require laundering after done. But paper is a renewable resource. Electricity is clean energy, except for where it's often generated -- coal or nuclear power plants. And I just can't blow my nose or clean up a dirty kid with a stream of hot air.

I think there's a little cult going around that scratches the words "WIPE HANDS ON PANTS" as an added instruction on some of them.

I recently found a hot-air dryer that's effective: Excel's XLerator hand dryer. The airflow is turbo-charged or something, but it gets the job done before it shuts off! The only drawback is that it's noisier than the other hot-air hand dryers.

This morning and afternoon, I manned a table for the Dayton Pagan Alliance at the local Pagan Pride Day event, which was held at the Founders' Quadrangle of Wright State University.

Attendance was decent; I'd say about half were WSU students. I estimate we had somewhere between 75 and 100 people.

The highlight of the day: At noon, we had about a dozen protestors assemble at one end of the quad exercising their First Amendment rights and preaching their message of intolerance and hatred in the name of Jesus. We ignored them while Campus Police kept watch over them in case anyone stepped over the line. The protestors left around 1:00, which was when our open ritual was scheduled to begin.

"If they will not listen, shake the dust from your shoes and move on." Matthew 10:10, I believe.

One of the local TV news stations was there covering the protests. As of now, their version of the events has not been posted to their website.

When I got to my car at the end of the event, I noticed that someone left a Chick tract on my windshield. How special.

It's 6:30am, and I should be sleeping. But no. My body woke up at around 5:45. So, what to do besides read email and LJ? Watch TV. Flip through the channels until I find something interesting.

Sometimes I see informercials for products that look intriguing. But I can't afford the products they're hawking. I also question if I truly need the product, or if I just want it. The people who write the scripts for infomercials are skilled at inventing a need for their products.

My current objects of fiscal lust: Steam mops. The H2O Mop sells for just under $200. The Shark steam mop sells for half of that.

I like steam cleaners. So much so that I have two of them -- a big steam cleaner with a nozzle (called "Mr. Steam") for big jobs, and a small steam bottle for the kitchen. They get the job done without the use of chemicals. I'm not completely convinced that steam cleaning kills all the germs, though. But they're certainly effective, almost as effective as using boiling water or hot coffee on my countertops or floors.

So, should I buy one when I can afford to do so? Or just see if I could rent one, like I would a Rug Doctor?
