Box 75.....

This afternoon, I pulled another box of computer prinouts out of the storage unit to go through. It contained posts from rec.arts.comics from 1987. I didn't have time to read through every post, so I quickly went through the printouts and put them in a carbdoard tote for recycling. After the box was done (about an hour later), I then drove to the local recycle dumpster and dumped them.

It's no longer worth my time to sift through printouts looking for a few articles I want to save. Every few years, I'd be repeating the process -- culling the ones I want to save and pitching the rest -- and I'd never be finished.

The reason I was hanging onto these posts is that a bunch of them had discussion on the Watchmen comic book series, as that was the time the series came out. Would people really be interested in 20-year-old Usenet posts? I once thought so, but now, I'm thinking "Probably not." Especially if they're not already in electronic format. These would take too long to scan and error-correct.

Found it!

Thanks and a tip of the hat to [livejournal.com profile] autographedcat, who steered me towards ljArchive, a Windows-based tool which enables LJ users to download an entire archive of one's own LJ (including comments) and search through it.

With the help of this tool, I found my original list of 25 things I'd miss if I left Dayton. The list is somewhat obsolete as the local Ritter's and the Thirsty Dog are now closed. (I believe there are still Thirsty Dog brewpubs in the Cleveland/Akron area, and supposedly, their brews are bottled and available in finer beer stores.)

Somewhere in my LJ, I made a post about 25 things I'd miss if I ever left Dayton. I can't seem to find it. So I'll have to start another list.

These are the times I really wish LJ had a feature which enabled people to search their own journals. (I have the spider-killer on so Google has no knowledge or record of these pages.)

And now, the list.... )

...how I feel about yesterday's shooting at a Knoxville, TN UU church. I'm saddened, shocked, and angered, to say the least.

Part of me wants vengeance, to put the man accused of the shooting before a firing squad. Or worse, do it in such a way to maximize his pain and agony.

Another part of me says he deserves justice, no matter how heinous his crime.

And another part of me wonders if the same could happen at my congregation. I believe we already have safeguards in place, but I should double-check.

Now comes the fun part: loading stuff into boxes for easy transport. I tend to have everything spread out and/or stacked in piles. I'm visually oriented, so I like to be able to see what I have. This, of course, leads to the appearance of having things cluttered. Hopefully when I box everything together, it would appear less cluttered.

But I gotta go through the stuff. Most of the clutter is paperwork. That takes time, unless I blitzkrieg my way through the piles. Tonight I found a pile of pizza coupons and coupon books from early 2007. Into the recycle bucket it all went, one piece at a time.

Oh, and I did see Part 1 of "The Stolen Earth", the series 4 finale for "Doctor Who". As I said in a comment to another LJ-friend who was blown away by the episode, "Excuse me while I pick up my jawbone from the floor." Part 2 is next week.

Shout-outs: Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] agraywitch!

Went to Columbus today to fill out my starting paperwork for $EMPLOYER. I still don't have an official start date, as the manager at $NEW_CLIENT is on vacation this week. I'm guessing I start either next week or the week after. A tentative date was listed; if it changes, they'll write in the new date and I'll initial it.

I also had to take the pee test, which I did after filling out the paperwork.

Then I went looking at apartments, went shopping at Micro Center, and had lunch. )

Yesterday, I took a Graco Pack & Play and an Arm's Reach cosleeper to the local Once Upon A Child. I stopped over today and found that they had passed (i.e. declined to buy) both items. The Pack & Play has a small hole in the mesh, and the cosleeper is just too worn to be considered "gently used".
I tried to take some baby clothes there last year, but they passed on them too, for cat hair.

There's another consignment store nearby, but they won't accept items unless they're in pristine mint condition.

Why is it so hard to get rid of baby items? What should I do next? I could try donating them and taking the tax writeoff, but I'd rather have the cash. And I'm not in a good location for a yard sale.

After several hours of flipping channels over several days, it's true: 90% of television programs are crap. No wonder I watch so much sports on TV. That and the Weather Channel.

Most sitcoms leave me unimpressed, and the rest of the network fare is just plain boring. And infomercials? Oh please.

The worst times for programming are in the afternoon and late evening/early morning.

I realize that TV execs view their medium as commercials with a program around them. But if you want me to watch the program, make it interesting for me.

Fri 7/18: Didn't do much. Cooked up some bratwurst and sausage on the grill for lunch. Skipped Dark Knight because I didn't want to shell out $10 for a movie. Got a phone call with some great news: a job offer.

Sat 7/19: Didn't do much, although I probably should have. Skipped the Dayton Air Show, since I didn't want to shell out money for a ticket and stand outside in the hot humid air. Had steak and eggs at the Waffle House. Went to bd's Mongolian Grilll for dinner, using my free birthday meal coupon.

Sun 7/20: Brought M to church with me for some UU churchy goodness, as one of my LJ-friends calls it. Went to Hardee's for lunch and then to Splash Moraine for the afternoon. The evening was capped with a dinner at Sake Japanese Steak House with friends from the Bismarck -- Jack, Suzanne, Kevin, Lisa, Rebecca, Rick, Dennis, and Eric.

Today I go the the local U-Haul store to get some boxes and label tape.

It's done.

All of Jack and Suzanne's stuff has been moved out of their old house and into their new house a few blocks away. Now I can rest my body for a few days. And think about the amount of stuff I'd have to move when it comes time to move out of the condo. At least most of it's in boxes.

...helping two non-LJ friends in Middletown move out of their house, in which they've lived for 36 years. Helped out for 8 hours on Saturday, all day Monday (yesterday), and all day Tuesday (today). They need to have everything out of the house by noon Wednesday. Lots of stuff got thrown out, lots of stuff got packed and loaded in the U-Haul truck, and a few things ended out at the curb (which were picked up promptly by people driving by).

My body's tired, but I'm going back for more.

I know, this is more a topic for Monday debate/discussion and not Friday night. But I've been waiting on a freecycler with a Blackberry who was supposed to come over earlier.

Apparently the freecycle movement is catching on. Post a wanted or offer notice on the local freecycle list, and see who's interested. Sure beats setting something by the curb and wondering if it's going to be picked up before the trash men get there. And it's supposed to keep stuff out of the landfills.

However, it's been my personal experience that people are no longer in a big hurry to collect their goods. Case in point: Two weeks ago (June 24), I posted a notice for some DS/DD disks. Last week (June 30), I posted a note for some DS/HD disks. I had a few takers and offered to split the lot among the claimants. One claimant has already come by to pick them up. Two claimants asked me to mail the disks to them, which I did. (I fronted the postage, which I should get after all the boxes arrive at their destination.) I've been in email contact with two of the claimants (including the Blackberry user), but due to scheduling and timing conflicts, I've not yet been able to give the claimants their disks. Two other claimants haven't responded to their email reminders from me, and I'm about to write them off as no-shows.

Do people really have a short memory and forget (or delete) their email from previous days? Are people just too darn busy to remember? I really hate having to remind people. Or is it the high cost of gas that's making it prohibitive for people to pick up the items they claimed via the list? I've seen a few posts on the freecycle lists which state that the person wanting certain goods will only travel so far to pick up items. I wonder if that's going to be a trend. If that's the case, less and less people may freecycle.

Once again, Japanese beetles have taken to my rose bush and have started eating and mating. There aren't as many this year, thankfully. So I went out with my container of soapy water and gently knocked the beetles into the water, where they met a watery demise. I know this an exception to the Rede and "Harm None", but there are times when I need to make exceptions.

M doesn't like looking at the dead beetles in the water. I mention beetles to her and she says, "The Beatles sing 'Yellow Submarine.'" She's gonna have problems with homophones.

Now that I've gone through most of my floppy disks, I have two empty media storage modules -- one for CD-Rs and one for floppies. I'm in the process of selling these on eBay. I have pictures, a description of the modules, and the weights of the modules. For those of you have already sold items on eBay, what else should I be doing?

I skipped the fireworks celebration. Too much having to deal with crowds and traffic, and no one to go with. (M does not do well with loud noises.) I think my cats are happy I stayed home; we could all hear the loud booms from home. The firwaorks were shot from the high school stadium about 2 miles away from me. On nights when the marching band is practicing, I can hear them.

I tried installing the MuVo software on tardis (that's the laptop), rebooting, and plugging in the MuVo. Nothing. Then I thought, "What if I supply power to the USB card that the MuVo is plugged into?" Sure enough, it did the trick and recognized the MuVo. So I started loading songs onto it -- all 5 CDs from the Living In Oblivion series.

I also tried one last time on orac (that's the desktop), plugging in the MuVo to a powered USB hub. Nothing except the display of the "pulse" going from the unit to the computer. Maybe I got some leftover driver or program that's preventing the MuVo from being recognized. I'll deal with that later. In the meantime, I'll enjoy my music on the MP3 player and use the laptop to load it with music while I uninstall the MuVo software on the desktop.

It's time for the Capitol Steps' quarterly radio program, "Politics Takes A Holiday". If your local NPR station doesn't carry it, go here to download a RealAudio version of the program.

It happened 28 years ago today. A family takes off early in the morning for their summer vacation. 5 minutes after leaving home, they get hit by a drunk driver, killing the father, who was driving the car.

That man was Tim Simard, one of the science teachers at my high school. While I personally didn't have Mr. Simard as a teacher for any of my science courses, I saw him in the halls and recognized him on sight.

That year, even though I didn't drive at the time, I vowed that I would never drive drunk. Now that I've been driving for a while, I know that when I'm behind the wheel, I need to feel that I'm in control. I've driven after 1 or 2 drinks, which (for my body weight) isn't quite driving while ability impaired (DWAI), but I've had to be extra vigilant and alert. Any more than 2 drinks and I'm going to pass the keys to someone else.

That's the best way I can remember Mr. Simard.

Shout-outs: Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] happyfunpaul and to [livejournal.com profile] figmo! And a happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] stormraven37!

Two weeks ago, I ordered a Creative Labs MuVo V100 MP3 player/voice recorder. Creative was running a sale on them; the 2 Gb model was around $30. I wanted the MuVo because it was a combination MP3 player and voice recorder.

It arrived yesterday afternoon. I spent a few hours last night and this morning playing with it, installing the software, and trying to get the thing to work. The voice recorder works, but I gotta crank up the volume to hear it. I plugged it in to my computer, which recognized the device but didn't (and still doesn't) assign it a drive letter. I can plug it into my laptop, which does recognize it and assigns it a drive letter. I tried copying MP3 files to it, but it stopped at around the fourth or fifth track.

I went to Creative's support page. What they suggested didn't work. I couldn't find a phone number for their support, but I found a place where I could send them an email.

I'll play with it some more, but if I don't get results within a week, I think I'll try to send it back.

Has anyone else had similar problems with their MP3 players?

Siscom finally got around to deactivating my old email account. Just as well; most of it was spam anyway. From here on out, any mail sent to me at my dnaco.net address will not get read. The email transition to GMail (and fuse.net) is complete.

Fri 6/27: Went to Buffalo Wings & Rings for lunch and downloading. (They have wi-fi!) Then did some shopping at Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Then went to a doctor's appointment. Had dinner with the Usual Suspects at Olive Garden, and then saw Wall-E. I liked it; it was cute.

Sat 6/28: Went to the local UU church for breakfast and a little bit of work on the exterior. It rained, so all we could do was to replace nails with screws and cover the screw heads with putty. Drove to Indianapolis for lunch and a ManKind Project Integration Groups Council meeting. After the meeting was over, I received a message from [livejournal.com profile] tollers that she was stuck in Anderson while her truck was being repaired. And so I drove to Anderson, and got lost a few times trying to find the O'Reilly Auto Parts store she was at. Eventually, I found her. We went to IHOP for dinner and good conversation, stopped at an ATM, bought a book at Walgreens, and dropped her off before heading home to Dayton. I think she tells the tale better than I do.

Sun 6/29: Overslept. Was late to UU services, but they let me in anyway. Picked up M and had a great time at Splash Moraine. Stopped for dinner at McDonald's. Called my parents. Counted and divided around 200 DS/DD floppy disks that are going to 4 people via the local Freecycle list.
